3. Standard deduction
En 2026: $16,100 single / $32,200 married filing jointly / $24,150 head of household. Esta calculadora usa standard deduction (no itemized).
4. Federal income tax (7 brackets)
Sobre el taxable income (gross - standard deduction) se aplican los 7 brackets: 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, 37%. Los thresholds se ajustan por inflación cada año.
5. State income tax (no incluido)
9 estados sin state income tax: AK, FL, NV, NH, SD, TN, TX, WA, WY. Los demás cobran entre 1% y ~13% según estado. Esta calculadora estima solo federal.
Preguntas frecuentes
Why doesn't this calculator include state income tax?+
State income tax rules vary widely between the 50 states. Nine states have no state income tax at all (AK, FL, NV, NH, SD, TN, TX, WA, WY). The others use different rates and rules. Adding state tax accurately would require a state selector with its own rate tables — this calculator focuses on federal estimation only.
What is the 2026 Social Security wage base?+
For 2026, the Social Security wage base is $184,500. You only pay 6.2% Social Security on the first $184,500 of annual wages. Above that, no Social Security is withheld (Medicare continues with no cap).
When does Additional Medicare Tax apply?+
The 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax applies to wages above $200,000 for single filers, $250,000 for married filing jointly, and $125,000 for married filing separately. The threshold is calculated per individual employer, so multiple jobs may not trigger it at withholding time but at tax filing.
Does this consider 401(k) or other pre-tax contributions?+
No. Pre-tax 401(k) contributions (up to $24,500 in 2026 for those under 50, $32,500 if 50+) reduce your taxable income for federal tax but not for FICA. HSA, traditional IRA, and Section 125 plans also have pre-tax effects. This calculator does not model them.
What about itemized deductions vs standard?+
This calculator uses the standard deduction ($16,100 single / $32,200 joint in 2026). About 90% of taxpayers use the standard deduction since the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. If you itemize (mortgage interest, state taxes, charitable contributions, etc.) and your itemized total exceeds the standard, your real federal tax will be lower than the calculator shows.
Where do these numbers come from?+
From the IRS official 2026 inflation adjustments released in October 2025 and updated with the One Big Beautiful Bill amendments. The Social Security wage base comes from the Social Security Administration. Sources are linked at the bottom of this page.
